SNMP is a short name for Simple Network Management Protocol which is a component of the internet protocol suite used to monitor network-attached devices. This tool is often used by network administrators to check the performance of the network. With the help of SNMP, you can check the performance of the network on your Linksys. It also configures alerts to be sent to your management station.

So here, Linksys Support provided the quick and precise way in order to enable the SNMP tool on your Linksys router. Just follow the steps described below.

  • Firstly, open the Cisco IOS and enter into the configuration mode. You can also enter into the mode by typing Configure terminal.

  • Now you have to enable your router’s SNMP. Then enter the following string to create a community string i.e. ‘snmp-server community community_string ro’. ‘Ro’ stands for ‘Read only’ which you can always replace with ‘rw’ which is ‘Read write’.

  • Then configure your Linksys router. Then type the following string: ‘snmp-server host XXXX’ where XXXX is the actual IP address of the SNMP management station.

  • Now enter the following command ‘Router)config)#snmp-server enable traps’ to enable SNMP alerts. It will allow your router to send alerts to your IP address.

  • In the end, type ‘exit’ to close the ‘configuration mode’ and then enter ‘write memory’ to your new configuration.

By following these steps, you can enable the simple network on your router. The whole process might be a bit complicated for you.
