When we count basic components of local area network, switches and routers are both essential requirements. On a simple note routers are actually switches that help in connecting between both local area networks and wide area networks through Internet Service Provider.
For turning a router into switch, first of all, the user has to turn off the settings in the device itself which let it work as a router. While performing the settings, you actually allow the Linksys equipment to broadcast same like main equipment signals thus letting your computer systems to link to the Linksys as if it is like connecting to main equipment on the network. Thus, it creates a big and stable network for both home and business purposes.
How to make a switch of Linksys Router:
a. Harness the router to the computer system with a Cat5 Ethernet cord by plug in the one end of the cord into the jack of LAN 1 available at the back side of the equipment and the other side of the cord on the back of computer's Ethernet jack. Now, enter the GUI by typing 19.168.1.1 on the web browser. Then enter 'admin' for username and password fields. While on some devices, you can leave the password field blank.
b. On the Basic Setup page of GUI, disallow the DHCP server. Now, change the 'Local IP address' to 192.168.1.2. On a network, every equipment requires a distinct IP address. Now choose Save Settings.
c. Modify the SSID to match with the main router on the network. You can also use different name.
d. To match with the main equipment's password, change the pass phrase on Wireless Security tab. You can use a different pass phrase and for that make a different network connection for both equipments.
e. For saving router changes select Update Settings.
f. Now disconnect the cord from the computer system and equipment. And plug the one end of cord in LAN jacks available on main router's back side. And the other end on the Linksys router's back side into the WAN jack for changing it to a switch.
