First of all click on the wireless tab, then a “Basic Set Up” page will get open to you. This new window will be named as 'Basic Wireless Settings". All the settings are by default set by your ISP. It is important to change the settings as per your choice and create a secure wireless network.
In this page you will also see an option called "Wireless Network Name (SSID)" which will let you give a name to your network. You can keep any name that you want which you will see on the list of networks that are available to get connected to wireless devices. Keep the name that no one can recognize and never share any information to any outsider. Set your Network mode and Channel on default setting till you are informed to change by your ISP.
Now turn on the Wireless network by clicking on enable option of "Wireless SSID Broadcast" and then click on "Save Settings" option. This will make your network discovered and ready to get connected.
To access the wireless security options, go to "Wireless Security" section. You will see two options “Security Mode” and “Passphrase”. * Set the Security Mode to WPA2 as it is the best way to secure your network. But also make sure WPA2 is supported by the device you are connecting it to, and if not, then select option WPA or WEP. * Passphrase is the password that you would require at the time of connecting your device to the internet. You will have to enter it into the box given. Do not share this password with anyone, as others might use your internet data.
Click on "Save Settings":- Once you are done with all the settings, you need to hit Save Settings in order to save all the changes made. The moment you hit Save Setting the router will save the changes and automatically restart. Now your router is activated and secured, and ready to get connected and use.
Forwarding Ports
You can even configure your Linksys router and give the access of all the devices of computer connected to it to other computer and networks that are outside of the local network. Let’s see how you can do this:-
All the software or applications like games apps etc. can have unrestricted access to particular ports. You just have to open the particular app or software through your router's configuration page. -->
Now in the blank like which is on the left hand side of the window, in the "Port Range Forwarding" section, which is in the Applications and Gaming tab, type in the port forwarding information. If you want to forward port for other apps also, then type in their names too. Now in Application field where you see 2 boxes, type in the name, whichever name you want to give.
In the first box choose you starting port and in the second box choose your end port. If you want only one port, then choose the same option for both the boxes.
Now choose the protocol type like TCP or UDP as informed by your application. If you are unaware or unsure about this then select both.
Now enter the IP of the device to which you want to forward the port and where the application is running.
After you have entered the IP address and other required information, turn on the "Enabled" box by clicking on the check box.
Save the settings by click on "Apply changes". This will apply all the changes set out and restart the router.
